Biomechanics Fact of the Day: Crocodile Bites
Wednesday May 5, 2010
Sarcosuchus imperator, an ancient relative of modern alligators and crocodiles, had the most powerful bite of any living animal, producing 18,000psi (pounds per square inch) per bite. In other words, its the equivalent of being trapped under a medium sized semi-truck. Today’s crocodiles have continued the tradition of having the strongest bite on the planet (albeit a little weaker) with a jaw force of only 5,000psi (pounds per square inch), which just happens to be more than 12 times the strength of a great white shark.
